So many different cuisines, cultures, personal takes on flavours. And lets not get started on the latest 'fusion' food. Amazing.
Yes im sure we will be adding to this extensive list come this September/October when we go back to the USA but here are a few of our absolute favourite must-go-to places in the big apple. We're definitely visiting these gems again!
Now theres one of these babies in Vegas too (also Miami and Chicago) at the Venetian Hotel so dont fret if you cant make it to the East Coast. How silly of me, hopefully your planning a trip (or live in) to the States. Otherwise this next blog is going to be a massive tease. We are planning to hit BOTH sites on our next trip but im sure they're all amazing.
The NYC restaurant is located on 87 7th Avenue in the West Village, a short hop, skip and a jump from where we usually stay, coincidence?? I think not!
Now if you havent already figured it out from the title 'SushiSamba', it is that glorious fusion of Japanese and South American cuisine (Peruvian and Brazilian to be exact!). Weird right? But ohhhhh so good. Trust us. Think fish tacos, spicy mixed with citrus, and seafood seafood seafood! A flavour explosion of happiness. Food basically does the Rumba all the way down to your stomach. No kidding.
Being a 'share plates' type of establishment we got an array of dishes to try. Lets face it, we're gluttons for good food. We started off with the edamame, corn fritters, yellowtail crispy tacquitos and yellowtail ceviche.
Everyone is the states is familiar with ceviche, due to the massive Latin influence over there. However we had never heard of it before and it ignited a frenzy of "OMG! Where can I get this in Melbourne?!?"- cue Chin Chin's sashimi salad (reviewed in a previous blog)...
We then had the "Samba 7" Samba roll. Lobster, scallion, cucumber, celery and jalapeño roll with a wasabi-chimishurri dipping sauce. Divine. The lobster meat was tasty and soft and the sauce had just the perfect amount of kick! Hold up, I'm drooling all over my Mac, need a towel... We ate something else here too I'm sure but naughty blogger has forgotten. Please pardon this, its a wonder I remembered this much from a year ago!
Ok so first things first. Remember that scene in the Sex and the City movie where Carrie and Big are having their rehearsal dinner. And they're in that immaculate dining room with stag antler chandeliers and all the guests are sitting along one long table? THAT'S Buddakan.
A trendy Meatpacking district modern Asian restaurant located 75 9th Avenue, bookings are recommended and I would even recommend to get there a little earlier as the cocktails here are very tasty too! Let me tell you a martini glass of "Charm" will leave you feeling charming indeed!
Again a sharing is caring philosophy here so many plates were ordered. We started with General Tso's Dumplings (chicken, garlic and ginger dumplings also filled with a clear sauce that squirts out when bitten into- careful not to burn your tongue!), the crispy calamari salad (soo so scrumptious), and our vego friend Sas ordered the carrot dumplings which were super cute as they came actually looking like carrots! Impressive!

All in all just a fabulous experience. Just go. Be a tourist, take photos of the Carrie table, upload it onto Instagram then sip on your cocktail whilst waiting for your meals to arrive.
Five Napkin Burger
Now Coco didn't get to eat here, I went with a girlfriend of mine that lives in NYC, but she got me back with Yuca Bar (still sour about missing that one). Again there is a couple of these around the city but I went to the restaurant on 150 14th (near 3rd Ave) in Union Square/ East Village, you can never be sure.
Five Napkin Burger is a more chilled and wallet friendly atmosphere then the former 2 spots but don't be fooled, the food here is second to none! A crazy amazing burger joint with more. More as in 'random assortment of food' more. You've got sushi rolls, wings, salads and also traditional sides like mac and cheese, onion rings, and deep fried pickles?! Now I'm the girl that always turns her nose up at pickles and precariously handballs them over to a pickle-loving friend (or the bin), but I was intrigued by these mysterious deep fried pickles and felt adventurous. My conclusion? Strangely interesting, kinda gross but in a curious type of way? Try them. Be a rebel. Or if your, err, pro pickle then the choice is obvious.
So, back to the purpose of this restaurant- I ordered the Avocado-Ranch burger. I'm a sucker for anything with avocado (and jalapeño too for that matter) so for me it was an easy choice. The beef patty is cooked to your liking and so thick its a struggle to actually polish it off, but enjoyable every bite of the way. The sweet potato fries are also a healthier alternative to the norm (you'll learn I'm a little bit of a health freak).
A cool spot to share a bite with friends, very happy and helpful staff and good food. Nuff said!
Yuca bar is located in East Village right on the corner of Tompkins Square Park. Olie, our friend Sas and I attempted to go there on a Tuesday night not realizing it was half price tapas and happy hour- FAIL!! The place was absolutely packed to the brim with a long queue and no place to move! We looked in from the outside, stomachs rumbling and watched everyone laughing, talking, eating delicious looking Latin food, bobbing their heads along to the Latin music we knew we had to come back!!
Sas and I went back on a Thursday night, it was still quiet busy, neither of us were particularly ravenous so we ordered from the Tapas menu. I ordered the Taquitos de camaron - sautéed shrimp in a soft tortilla tipped with corn salsa and guacamole and OMG it was a flavour explosion in my mouth!!
I'm not a huge meat eater, I love my seafood and veggies and these babies were divine! We also shared a litre of red sangria- again amazing!!! I may have drank most of it so I may have been a littttle tipsy...all in all this place is fantastic not just for the food and alcohol but for the amazing atmosphere- it's always busy, filled was music, loud- the kinda place for people who go to socialise. Definitely taking Olie with me next time!!
Until next time... Olie & Coco xoxo
